Types of Multi-Axis CNC Machines:

Gantry Mills

A gantry is defined as a structure or machine that bridges over an area that moves on wheels usually on a set of parallel rails. Gantry mills have 3, 4, or 5-axes and are designed for cutting flat steel plate because its design allows for an easier way to move cutting torches in an X-Y coordinate system. Most gantry milling machines are also utilized for machining heavier, larger parts. Gantry mills can cut a variety of metals including aluminum and titanium as well as composites. These machines are most commonly used for aerospace applications.

Multi-Axis Horizontal Machining Centers

Multi-axis horizontal machining centers are defined as a manufacturing process involving tools that move in 4 or more directions, and create parts out of metal or other materials by milling away excess material, by water jet cutting, or by laser cutting. This type of machining is typically very complex due to the 4, 5, 6, or even 12-axes that communicate with numerically-controlled software, producing parts faster, and with more accuracy. Implementing multi-axis horizontal machining into your operations is guaranteed to reduce labor, increase efficiency, and maintain quality control across a variety of metals. These machines are most commonly used in the automotive, medical, and furniture industries.

The KRC Difference

We combine quality materials with innovative engineering methods and efficient assembly techniques when developing client-specific machining solutions. Our team will work with you to design the system that fits your identified market, function, budget and deadline. Our abilities include:

  • Latest solid-modeling tools and dynamic finite element analysis
  • In-house controls design and commercial-off-the-shelf CNC controls integration
  • High-level language compilers and computers are used for software development
  • All servo systems are designed with servo sizing and analysis software
  • Any new design is thoroughly tested and simulated for range and interference, stiffness and deflections, fatigue, and servo performance before the build
  • Software is developed and validated on test benches prior to machine implementation
